You should call an electrician whenever you have an electrical problem, both for your personal safety and so that your home's electrical system remains up to code. Under no circumstances should you try to troubleshoot your residential electrician system on your own.

Electrical service panels should be replaced every 20 to 30 years. Even though your electrical panel may be functioning properly, your breaker box may still be out of date. If you’ve been in your home that long, or if you moved into an existing home, your panel may be outdated. Check your electrical panel to make sure that it isn’t one of the following brands: Federal Pacific, Zinsco, Sylnavia, ITE/Pushmatic. These electrical panels were found to be defective and could cause fires.
If you notice burn marks, hear buzzing or crackling, or smell burning plastic around or inside the electrical panel, have a qualified electrician check the panel.
When a wire carrying an electrical current comes into contact with the grounded conductor wire, or the equipment ground wire, excessive heat is created. If you see sparks in your electrical panel, you’ve likely witnessed a short circuit and you should have it checked by an electrician as soon as possible.
GFCI is a type of electrical outlet designed to protect you from electrical shock if moisture is present. They are commonly found in bathrooms, kitchens, outdoor outlets, and garages. GFCI outlets feature test/reset buttons. Depress the “test” button to turn off the GFCI. The “reset” button turns it back on after it has tripped. If it doesn’t reset, you’ve got a problem and need an electrician.
You should have an outlet replaced when a plug falls out of an outlet, regardless of what is connected to. This is a sign that the contacts inside of the outlet are most likely worn out. Outlets that feel noticeably hot when you touch them are a clear sign that you are having an electrical issue and the outlet cover is cracked.
